RSU/MSAD59 Special Services

Special Education Services is a set of professional services that support children who struggle in school because of a disability. The special education department is tasked with identifying students with disabilities and providing services needed to allow students to progress in the general education curriculum.

Student Services - Frequently Ask Questions

What is the role of the Special Education Teacher?

  • The special education teacher works with students with identified disabilities who are in need of specialized instruction. They case manage students, accept referrals, provide specialized instruction, consult on educational issues and concerns, manage Individual Education Plans, hold meetings with parents about special education students, and conduct some types of evaluations.

How do parents know who to contact regarding issues related to Special Education?

  • Parents would contact the regular education teacher, if the student was not already receiving special education services. If they were receiving services they would contact the special education case manager/teacher. If their issues were with the special education teacher they would contact the Director of Special Services.

How do you decide at a meeting what services are warranted?

  • Eligibility and services needed are determined based on evaluation results, classroom performance, and teacher and parent reports.

What is the criteria for getting into a self-contained classroom - Life Skills Program?

  • This is an IEP team decision based on the severity of a student's needs. It may be cognitive, physical, or behavioral, or a combination of factors that prevent the student from successfully accessing or participating in the general curriculum program in a regular education setting.

Who is responsible for modifications and accommodations in the classroom?

  • Regular education teachers are responsible when the child is in the regular education setting. The special education teacher is responsible in the special education setting.

Can students on IEPs access supports like Title I ELA or Math Intervention?

  • Students are eligible for Title 1 services.
